Stars scored in either half, with Katlego Mashego involved in both goals, and the win cemented the Free State team's place in the top five in the table.

The KwaZulu-Natal side boasted a good record at home this season, unbeaten in five matches including three wins, but came into the game off a 1-0 defeat in their last match, and with only one point from their previous four games.

Edward Mnqele found the back of the net from the edge of the area in the 19th minute to open the scoring for Stars after latching on to a Mashego cross.

Maritzburg defender Michael Morton was cautioned shortly before the break as he conceded a free kick from a challenge on Mnqele and was subsequently booked for unsporting behaviour after protesting the decision.

Mashego doubled the lead for his side in injury time as Noah Chivuta provided the cross, and Mashego, from deep inside the area, banged the goal into the bottom right hand corner of the net, rounding off a good performance from the visitors.
